How is it done? What\u2019s the point? Can Will Solutions be an actor in the ESG approach? These are the questions we will address.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"color: #29524a;\">WHAT IS THE ESG?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"color: #29524a;\">ESG is an acronym for \u201cEnvironment, Social and Governance.\u201d It integrates different elements that are essentially included in a <strong>Sustainable Development Plan<\/strong>: carbon footprint, corporate social responsibility, good governance etc\u2026<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #29524a;\">ESG globally answers a question formulated by different social and economic stakeholders (including large investors): <strong>What is the extra financial impact of a company\u2019s activities on nature and society?<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #29524a;\">What are ESG factors and criteria?<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"color: #29524a;\">ESG criteria are a series of elements that are made public and cover several aspects:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #29524a;\">ESG is a series of criteria and elements that are made public to answer this question through different elements covering:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: #29524a;\"><strong>environmental areas<\/strong> \u2013 such as waste management, energy consumption and carbon footprint, deforestation, biodiversity preservation, risk prevention related to natural and industrial disasters (oil spills, soil contamination, bad land management, greenhouse gas emissions\u2026) \u2013 etc.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #29524a;\"><strong>social areas<\/strong> \u2013 such as social dialogue in the company\u2019s management policy, gender parity, prevention of work-related accidents, staff training and, more recently, EDI criteria (Equity, Diversity, Inclusion) for good integration management;<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #29524a;\"><strong>governance areas<\/strong> \u2013 transparency, independence of the board of directors, diversity, the structure of the board of directors, tax practices and investment, portfolio manager transparency, financial investment and risk management strategies, executive compensation, etc.)<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"color: #29524a;\">An <strong>ESG report<\/strong> is therefore an annual extra-financial report that takes stock of a company\u2019s ESG areas, the annual or multi-annual objectives that are set to achieve these types of project and the tools that enable the company\u2019s performance to be assessed in this respect.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"color: #29524a;\">ESG TOOLS AND THE CREDIBILITY OF A COMPANY WITH REGARD TO SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-10742 aligncenter lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/solutionswill.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/ESG-policy-2-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"A paper pattern representing ESG tools and factors in companies\" width=\"698\" height=\"465\" data-srcset=\"https:\/\/solutionswill.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/ESG-policy-2-300x200.jpg 698w, https:\/\/solutionswill.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/ESG-policy-2-480x320.jpg 480w\" data-sizes=\"(min-width: 0px) and (max-width: 480px) 480px, (min-width: 481px) 698px, 100vw\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 698px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 698\/465;\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #29524a;\">All ESG data can not be quantified in the same way.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #29524a;\">For example, in the <strong>area of GHG emissions<\/strong>, there are <strong>three perimeters<\/strong> \u2013 called <strong>Scope 1, 2 and 3<\/strong> \u2013 which have been defined with the development of Life Cycle Assessments (LCA). Taking into account only Scope 1 and 2 (direct and indirect GHG emissions) and not Scope 3 \u2013 other emissions linked to the chain, for example \u2013 <strong>can lead to a distortion of reality<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #29524a;\">Similarly, some ESG criteria are qualitative or even linked to a value system that is difficult to quantify, such as Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) or EDI criteria.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #29524a;\">The main tools available to establish the basis of an ESG report are life cycle analysis, audit and materiality analysis.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #29524a;\">Therefore, a company\u2019s credibility in this area is linked to international <strong>protocols established globally and <\/strong><strong>made by governments and\/or provincial governments<\/strong><strong>, norms and regulatory requirements, certifications and other recognitions<\/strong> that use <strong>external auditors<\/strong> or <strong>registrars<\/strong> who are recognized as neutral, rigorous and credible.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #29524a;\">For some time now, there have also been rating agencies on ESG performance, such as <em>Impak Finance, Moody, Sylvera<\/em> and others. These protocols often include guidelines for managing carbon emissions and carbon offset programs<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #29524a;\"><strong>Some examples of stakeholders linked to the ESG policy<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: #29524a;\">At the international level, the <strong>Task Force for Climate-related Financial Disclosures<\/strong> (TCFD), the <strong>Carbon Disclosure Project<\/strong> (CDP) or the <strong>UN Sustainable Development Goals<\/strong> (SDGs) are recognized protocols and companies that apply them stand out in doing so.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #29524a;\">The <strong>Sustainability Accounting Standards Board<\/strong> (SASB) is a tool for investors to compare the carbon footprint of companies\u2019 activities. It assesses how a company\u2019s \u201csustainability\u201d elements increase or decrease its value. How does the impact of a company\u2019s activities on the environment such as its gas emissions, waste, and other <strong>environmental factors <\/strong>affect its profitability?<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #29524a;\"><strong>The Global Reporting Initiative (GRI)<\/strong> evaluates the environmental performance of companies on 80 core indicators. It enables sector-based comparisons of different companies at international level. It can be based on investing in industrial facilities that reduce emissions footprint, participating in <strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/solutionswill.com\/en\/\">voluntary markets<\/a><\/span><\/strong> and other environmental benefits from concrete actions.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #29524a;\"><strong>B Corp certification<\/strong> is a designation, based on a rigorous assessment, that confirms the company meets the highest standards under three pillars: Social and Environmental Performance, Public Transparency, and Legal Responsibility. Solutions Will is otherwise <strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bcorporation.net\/en-us\/find-a-b-corp\/company\/solutions-will\">B Corp certified since 2019<\/a>.<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #29524a;\"><strong>The Carbon Call Initiative<\/strong> is a \u201ctrusted\u201d GHG emissions accounting approach geared towards carbon pricing and the Net Zero Carbon of 2050. It seeks to address carbon dioxide accounting issues related to data quality, inconsistent results across different reports and measurement tools, and platform silos.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/sciencebasedtargets.org\/\">Being part of the SBTi initiative<\/a><\/span><\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"color: #29524a;\">There are several other tool standards and general or specialized certifications in the global mapping of a company\u2019s \u201csustainable\u201d commitment. To this, we must also add distinctions, and peer recognition awards through sectoral or multi-sectoral competitions. This is the case with the Mercuriades awards from the FCCQ, the Envirolys awards from the CETEQ, or the Gala awards from the Vall\u00e9e-du-Richelieu Chamber of Commerce, etc.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #29524a;\">All or part of these \u201ccertifications-distinctions\u201d allow the company to acquire credibility in its willingness to act in the face of the challenges imposed by climate change. In September 2022, the consulting firm Millani noted that \u201c<em>investors are expressing a desire to understand more deeply the impacts of these ESG topics<\/em>\u201c.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #29524a;\">How are they managed, what performance indicators are tracked and how are they evolving? What is a company\u2019s ability to adapt to risks and mitigate future negative impacts?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #29524a;\"><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.millani.ca\/\">Millani\u2019s report<\/a><\/span><\/strong> also notes that \u201c<em>Companies that stand out in the strategic value of ESG issues incorporate ESG performance measures into board and executive compensation\u201d<\/em>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #29524a;\">This means, among other things, that it is not enough to produce an ESG Report that includes data and targets, but that reporting using recognized methods shows precisely whether the targets set have been met. The company must therefore communicate its results in a robust and credible manner. For this, there are three reference poles:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: #29524a;\">The first is the commitment of management, particularly the CEO, the consensus of the board of directors and senior management on ESG objectives, and the transparency of the methods used to collect the data.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #29524a;\">The second is rigorous external evaluations and the proper selection of the attestations and certifications we just referred to.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #29524a;\">Finally, the last one concerns action, evaluation and feedback on the processes put in place to achieve the company\u2019s ESG objectives.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"color: #29524a;\">This is how we believe an ESG report will meet the expectations of all stakeholders.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"color: #29524a;\">ESG POLICY AND DECARBONIZATION OF OPERATIONS<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"color: #29524a;\">The decarbonization of activities and the business model in general is one of the key elements to address the environmental domain in its ESG report.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #29524a;\">By respecting the decarbonization hierarchy (measurement, avoidance, reduction, and offsetting), organizations and companies can integrate a virtuous and concrete decarbonization plan into their ESG report.
